Pikachu: the most famous Pokémon in the world
Pikachu is Pokémon number 025 in the National Pokédex and the official mascot of the entire Pokémon franchise. An Electric-type and the evolution of Pichu, it has been Ash Ketchum’s inseparable companion in the anime since the first episode in 1997, and the quintessential symbol of Nintendo worldwide. Its popularity transcends the world of video games to become one of the most recognized pop culture icons on the planet.
In the video games, Pikachu is the starter Pokémon of Pokémon Yellow (1998) and stars in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! (2018). Its Gigantamax form appeared in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and while a Mega form does not exist, it does have variants such as Pikachu wearing different hats in special editions.
In the anime, Ash’s Pikachu refused to evolve into Raichu to keep growing in its own way, one of the most emotional moments of the original series. Its finishing move Thunderbolt became the most iconic attack in the entire franchise.
With over 25 years of history and a presence in every format — video games, anime, films, merchandise, trading card game — Pikachu is a cultural symbol of global reach that goes far beyond the world of Pokémon.
